Scottsdale’s growth spurt in the 1970s and 1980s prompted a citizen initiated preservation effort that resulted in a plan to protect nearly one-third of Scottsdale as the natural McDowell Sonoran Preserve (www.mcdowellsonoran.org). Today, this Preserve plays host to hikers, horseback riders and outdoor enthusiasts who delight in the region’s ancient Indian artifacts and wildlife such as coyotes, Gila monsters, desert tortoises, chuckwallas, javelinas, deer and mountain lions. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC) provides free weekly guided treks in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. There’s an MSC guided hike for almost every interest and hiking level. Hikes are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays throughout November and December, with a special 5-mile hike of the Taliesin Overlook on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 22. Reservations are not required for most hikes. For hikes that require reservations, you can make them beginning two weeks prior to each hike date. You’ll be expected to wear sturdy, enclosed shoes or boots, bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and a snack (or lunch if noted). For more information about upcoming hikes, including directions to the meeting places, visit www.mcdowellsonoran.org/hiking.asp. |
